We had our latest appointment at the hospital today. Was uneventful and uninteresting on the whole. We did get to go to brand new funky hospital though, which was good.
We had a male midwife. That did surprise me, and made me question how I’d cope with a male midwife in labour… it seems silly, but I don’t think I’d like it much. Something about being that exposed and vulnerable in front of a strange man. He was perfectly lovely though, and knew his stuff. If anything, he was a bit preachy and it kind of felt like a test about how much we knew about breastfeeding and infant injections and stuff. In short, I’m measuring exactly right despite the small belly and weeny beany’s heart beat was strong and easy to find (about 140 bpm). He also asked about contraception, then kind of laughed and agreed that it’s not really a concern for us… he was completely relaxed about Lazyboo and I, and included her in the grilling. He was also pleased that she’d be staying home for (hopefully) a month after the birth.
I also had the gestational diabetes test – ew that stuff certainly made me feel ill! They don’t actually give us results – if they’re bad, then I’ll get a letter in the next couple of days. If not, I can just assume all is well, and discuss this and other blood tests next time I see my GP (on 11 August).
All of that took just over an hour. Lazyboo had taken the whole day off, so we went shopping! Window shopping mostly given the dire financial situation that just won’t go away. We did, however, manage to buy a few small things – we have a complete ‘coming home’ outfit for the boy now! Cos somehow that seems really important to me (I’ve given up trying to analyse my warped priorities!) Here’s a photo of the whole thing, and an alternative in case it’s hot (who knows what the weather will be doing in October):
They just seem to be so HUGE. I can’t imagine that something that a baby big enough to wear those will actually come out of me. It’s bit scary really.
We then went to a big baby shop to scope out carseats and confirmed which one we’ll eventually get. Nice and simple. They were having a big sale on nursery bedding and that definitely sucked us in… Because it also seems important to us (well, mainly me but I’m trying to share some of the craziness!) that WB has a matching and cute cot bedding set. We have some blankets, and a few generic sheet sets but I just want one new and funky set! We’re torn between a barnyard set:
(Lazyboo gets a bit silly every time she sees that sheep…) and a jungle one – today there was a big special on a major set for that one, with lots of extra stuff for a very low price.
Note that we would NOT be getting the whole thing! Just bedding mainly, and maybe a rug.
We ultimately decided to leave it to fate and transfer some of the money we have saved for WB stuff. When that becomes available next week (this is a deliberate thing to try and prevent impulse purchases!), we’ll go back. The jungle one, ironically called Malawi (my Dad lived there for a couple of years a while back), will most probably be sold out. If there are any sets left, we’ll get that. If not, then we’ll go with the barnyard one. Anyone have any opinions on them?

JUNGLE!! I am staying away from all shops that sell such cute stuff. And the gestational test liquid is sickening. Good luck that it comes up clear
yuck.. i had my glucose test yesterday too! Here’s hoping we are both in the clear.
cute going home outfit! what size did you get? we have 2-3 little outfits ready and waiting!
did you like the new hospital? we thought it was a bit bleak and cold, I am hoping the wards are a little more warm in atmosphere…but most importantly hoping for a single room!
@ Owlie – the pants are NB, the rest are 0-3m – they’re all from pump.kin patch so assume 0000 and 000.
The new hospital seemed to us completely empty mostly but packed in the clinic and a pathology areas – there wasn’t heaps of waiting room and lots of people in there.
We too are hoping for a single room! Did you know that partners are only allowed to stay on the final night even if you do have a single room? And that kids are only allowed from 2-8 on the wards (partners are allowed 8-8)? We found those things to be a bit sucky.
Ultimately we’re reserving judgement until we get a proper tour at the childbirth ed classes.
i love malawi !
