This morning was the first morning in a while that we could actually sleep in. I even slept the night through without having to get up to pee (I’m conveniently ignoring that this is most probably because I am dehydrated due to lack of water drinking!). So both Lazyboo and I were highly distressed when I woke up just before 8 this morning after severely wrenching my neck. So now I’m all stiff and have spent the day in pain despite at least three massages from Lazyboo, heat packs and hot showers. This is all the more ironic given that yesterday afternoon I called and cancelled a massage appointment I had for tomorrow morning – I guess I’ll be calling to beg for it back first thing tomorrow!
Despite this, we’ve had a really busy day. Princess goes back to school tomorrow and we decided to bake lots of things to fill her lunchbox with (and ours too!). It’s quite hard to find good reasonably healthy gluten free dairy free snacks that don’t get repetitive so we generally have to DIY. So we made pfeffernusse (german pepper and ginger cookies), scones, and vegie cornbread mini muffins. We also made a huge amount of peanut butter cookies before we remembered that she can’t take them to school (she has a boy with peanut allergy in her class). During this baking frenzy, Lazyboo also made a delicious meatloaf and wonderful mash to have for a big winter warming sunday lunch. Yum.
We also made a cinnamon teacake to take with us to visit our friends K and little J and cousin R who is staying with them right now. It was great to see them. J is getting so big and it was so much fun to see him crawl around and play. He has such an engaging grin – we can’t help but smile with him. And as for that gorgeous little laugh! We arranged to buy some cloth nappies from K, and had good chats about baby care and the need for flexibility in birth plans. She also reminded me (again!) that I really need to see a lactation consultant while in the hospital after WB is born (cos I had a bit of trouble feeding Princess and am quite anxious about it) and I was happy to tell her that I already have a referral to see one BEFORE he’s born! It was also good to see R – we don’t see enough of her these days given our busy lives. She was all excited about her new ipod and full of tales about running fun runs with hangovers – I would lament the loss of single childless life but this was actually K’s fault! They’re really funny together. It’s really lovely to see K with J though – I just hope that we’re as relaxed and comfortable with WB as she and her husband are with their little J. I can just tell that they’ll be on speed dial come October!
This week will be full one – Princess back at school, both Lazyboo and I working every day (though I doubt that I’ll actually make it tomorrow given this neck) and my Dad is coming back from a year in China on Tuesday night (I’m sure I’ll be posting about that the all the related angst at some point!).
27 weeks now. Things are mostly going well with not too much nastiness. Just the fatigue that’s never really gone away and leg cramps if I forget to take my calcium/magnesium powder regularly (hmm mebbe that’s why my neck has seized…). I am also now looking VERY pregnant all of a sudden. I had a bath yesterday and as I got out Lazyboo walked in and said ‘Oh my god!’. Was not really a good reaction! This quick growth has caused some pain and discomfort in the my upper abdomen muscles when I’m upright for too long – though wearing a belly band makes a big difference. Other than those minor things, I’m feeling pretty great and I’m really enjoying feeling WB move around constantly.
According to some sources (and Lazyboo who has very definite opinions about the pregnancy timeline!) I’m now in the third trimester. It seems like time is running out and he’ll be here before we know it! This is at the same time exciting and stressful – there’s just SO much to do before then. And there’s nothing that brings it more into focus than the fact that I’m about to start my last semester of Uni (in two weeks), and WB is due at the end of week 10 (out of 12)… scary! I’m also trying hard not to think about the fact that this last subject has a 70% exam in November, and I’m likely to miss quite a few classes, not to mention having to sit an exam a few weeks after WB arrives.
Oh and take a look at Lazyboo’s newly added twitter feed.. This is her compromise after weeks of nagging her to post more often! I’m really hoping that she does update it so it is more recent than May. What can I say, I miss her perspective on things… cos she’s so much more expressive when writing even though we talk constantly.
Lactation Consultants can be awesome, especially if you find one that you agree with, because then you can just stick to one person’s advice rather than three million different nurses. I would also recommend the Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA) Book “Breastfeeding… Naturally” or to go along to a meeting… they have volunteer councellors as well as just a whole group of breastfeeding mums to talk to. Have enjoyed the support!
I’ve never heard of anyone else making pfeffernusse except my family! And we only make them at Christmas time, so I don’t think of them as everyday cookies. YUM!
