I seem to have lost blogging momentum despite there being only a few days left in the month. I do have some ideas for posts, one on the whole career journey, another on my sucky mother (i know, again) and mother envy. But tonight I don’t have the oomph to tackle either of those. So for something frivolous – an explanation of our blog names (I don’t think we have done that yet).
Lazyboo derives from a hilarious conversation we once had that bordered on hysteria. I have lived in Belgium for a couple of years and so speak French, and LB has always wanted me to teach her. Easier said than done! Anyway, the said conversation occurred during one of those many attempts. We were discussing animal names and one of them was the name for owls – Les hiboux. Now I couldn’t for the life of me remember if the s and the h should run together or not (and still don’t) so was trying it out both ways. This had LB in fits of laughter, because ‘les_hiboux’ sounds like lazyboo, so I started jokingly calling her that. Add that to her obsession with Missy Good’s Xena stories (where her daughter calls her Boo) and the name just stuck. The fact that she’s probably the opposite of lazy just made it funnier to me. Shortly after we started the blog, and it was the perfect name for her to use.
Clark has a much simpler origin. I got new glasses that LB claimed looked like Clark Kent’s. Boring huh?
FenFox used to be Princess until she grew out of that stage. That phase lasted from the age of 3 until about 8, and she was the pinkest frilliest little fairy princess that ever was. Drove us both crazy, but we tried very hard to not let that inhibit her and just dealt, even when she sat on the bed and sobbed her little heart out when made to wear pants rather than a dress or skirt. Just before McBean was born, I wrote a post about her and when she read it she asked if I would change her name. Her obsession at that time was all about fennec foxes (she even announced ambitions to move to Africa to be a park ranger and raise them) so I did a little poll and hence her blog name was changed.
McBean was originally PBX – Potential Baby X. This was the code we used to talk about far in the future baby plans when FF was around. During the pregnancy, he became Weeny Beanie, dubbed so by a friend of my mother’s (we had high hopes that she would be grandparent like to him, but alas we have barely seen her). When he became not so weenie, we thought about changing the name again, and decided on McBean. We were a tad obsessed with Grey’s Anatomy at the time (or with Sara Ramirez in any case… our dog is actually called Callie. Yes, I know we’re pathetic). I was also in the final year of my psych degree and was doing a class on neuropsychology. During these classes, McB would kick wildly. So we joked that he would be a neurosurgeon when he grew up, which led to McDreamy, which was then modified to McBean. Yes, once again, I know we’re a bit sad! And on top of that, one of the little guys I looked after at the time had inexplicably started calling him McCaius (and she still did, last time I saw her a few weeks ago).
Hmm, I seem to have found that momentum! Anybody else want to share where their blog names came from?
i never really got into grey’s but that sara ramirez was by far the hottest of them.
our blog names:
special k – obviously the k comes from kristen, and the special k is after the character in breakin’ 2: electric boogaloo. sometimes i just get the urge to sing to kristen, “hey special k won’t you come this way”.
the twinkle – i started the blog when she was just a twinkle in our eyes.
j-le came about in a convoluted way. bonanza jellybean was my favourite character from tom robbin’s even cowgirls get the blues, and she was known as jelly so i used that as my username for various online sites, including my first blog (which i started in order to impress k, who had had one since back in the dark ages of blogs). one day k referred to me online as j-le (like j-lo) instead of jelly, and it stuck. it’s a bit random really.
love grey’s. sara ramirez is smoking.
sorenson is my favourite character in my favourite book of all time – The Changeover by Margaret Mahy. also used as my multi-purpose online name.
bean is my nickname for c (can’t even really remember how it started) that has now become totally public both via blog and because arlo and huey call her bean too!
