Firstly, Princess’ name: A___ Marie (nn Ana) – and there goes any anonymity really cos there aren’t many A____ around! If any of you Melbournites meet us one day, be sure to say hello…
Her first name is unique – it came from combining Anna (sadly from an awesome TV show – This Li.fe – with a great strong but flawed female lead that I was obsessed with while pregnant) and Eve (from Yvette – mother of my heart who died a few months before Princess was born). The Marie is after an aunt of R1’s who was a mad traveller who died in a taxi crash in India.
In thinking of names this time, we want something unique that fits with A___. Lots of the names we are considering come from mythology or ancient history because Lazyboo has a degree in Classical Studies and has always been very interested in it, and I have too. The other names pretty much come from popular culture but hopefully aren’t too obvious.
So these are the names we are currently fighting about:
Boys:
Kingsley Darius (nn Rex) – my current favourite though I have some concerns re teasing.
Vidar Mattias (nn Dar) – Lazyboo’s pick though she’d probably prefer Vidar Kingsley.
Girls:
Ariadne Grace (nn Ari) – we both love this one
Evangeline Faith (nn Evie) – an alternative in case Ari doesn’t fit.
[though on further thought, maybe A____ and Evangeline is a bit too much..]
Why?
Kingsley –
the surname of some characters in a book that we both dearly love. Lazyboo really wanted this for our surname but we decided to go down another path in the end. Means King’s Meadow.
Darius –
I just like this one and think it goes well with Kingsley. Darius was a Persian king of kings.
nn Rex –
because we really like this for a little boy (but wouldn’t use it as a first name) and it references the King aspect of both other names.
Vidar –
Norse tree warrior god. He was strong and silent and personified the imperishable forces of nature. Lazyboo and I were listening to an audio book during our long car trips the week that Weany Beany was conceived with Vidar as one of the main characters.
nn Dar –
because we’re good stereotypical lesbians who loved Xe.na and adore the uber fanfic by Missy Good. We’ve even made Nanny S read them and my very straight country dwelling mother said, ‘I wouldn’t kick Dar out of bed!’ Was the most hilarious thing I’ve ever heard her say.
Mattias –
A very dear friend that I had while living in Belgium as a lost and lonely teenager.
Ariadne –
from Greek mythology. The myths are too complicated and varied to explain in a sentence so go visit Wiki.pedia if you’re interested. One version I like is that she was a fertility goddess. We like it because no matter the story she was a strong woman who made her own way and life despite great hardship.
Grace –
Lazyboo has always loved this name and wanted to give it to her daughter.
Evangeline –
Another of Lazyboo’s favourites. She says she saw a TV show (Ho.use of Eli.ott) with a character named that and loved the name (if not the character who was apparently a bit irritating!)
Faith –
What can I say but admit to us both being mad Bu.ffy fans? Faith kicked ass and was damn sexy while doing so! Just something about a strong tough woman đŸ˜‰
So what do you think? Please be brutally honest – we really want to know how these names would be received by anybody other than dorky us.
Updated – removed the big kid’s name so she isn’t googleable!
Let me say, I really, really like your choices. And I really like your reasons (especially Faith because of Buffy :))
The one that I like least would be Vidar on initial impressions, sounds like a bad guy name to me. Although I liked it more when I read the meaning.
Hope that helps, at least a little. I think you have great ideas!!
I really really love your names. And I’m ridiculously judgemental about baby names. Very.Good.Job.
Kingsley Darius and Vidar Mattias are my favorite boy names. Ariadne Grace is my girl pick.
Any of your options are great. So exciting!
Oh I like. Actually, I agree with MrsBluemont about all 3 except I would make it Mattias Vidar.
I have a soft spot for Vidar as a middle name. It’s my Icelandic step-dads middle name. I remember hating it when I was a kid but now that Iceland is cool…so too, I reckon, is Vidar!
